Cleaning and Disinfection Services

Barclay’s environmental hygiene services include cleaning and disinfection of cooling towers, potable water systems and water storage tanks, ice machines, decorative display fountains, and air handling coils.

Cleaning is performed by highly trained technicians under the direction of an Environmental Services Supervisor. Our technicians use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow best practice safety procedures. Our cleaning specialists have been trained in hazard communication, right-to-know program, proper use of personal protective equipment, lock-out/tag-out procedures, confined space entry, safe chemical handling procedures, chemical spill response, respiratory protection, pressure washer safety, and incident investigation.

We document the condition of the system before and after our cleaning process. At the conclusion of our cleaning work, we generate a written report with photographs showing before and after conditions and a certificate of compliance to validate the cleaning procedure.

Plant operators understand the value of clean heat exchange surfaces. A clean cooling tower is an efficient cooling tower and a safe cooling tower as well. The presence of just 1/32nd of an inch of biofilm can reduce heat transfer by up to 33% while a 1/16th inch layer of calcium scale deposit in a condenser can reduce chiller capacity by up to 50%. Barclay’s cooling tower cleaning program will enable you to comply with OSHA guidelines for preventing Legionnaires’ disease. OSHA recommends that facilities “clean and disinfect cooling towers quarterly or a minimum of twice a year if the unit is not used on a year round basis. Recommended cleaning schedule is prior to initial startup and again at end of season shut down.” Using Barclay’s Environmental Group to clean and disinfect your cooling towers will free up your employees for more important projects while providing you with peace of mind. Air handling coils easily become fouled with dust and grime and when these coils are fouled they do not provide the proper air flow, resulting in greater energy consumption. It has been estimated that dirty coils are responsible for as much as 1/3 of a facility’s wasted energy. In addition, coil capacity, measured as cubic feet per minute of air flow, can be reduced by as much as 30% if air handling coils become dirty. Fouled coils also increase operating temperatures which break down compressor lubricants and ultimately shorten the life of this equipment. Barclay’s Environmental Group performs coil cleaning in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. We use Best Practice and our technicians always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all safety precautions. Following each coil cleaning, we provide a written report with before and after photographs to validate our cleaning procedure and provide you with permanent written documentation.

A cleaning protocol should be performed on domestic hot water tanks on an annual basis and more often if environmental conditions dictate. The State of New York, Department of Health, for example, requires that “hot water storage tanks be drained, cleaned, and disinfected at least annually.”

Bacteria can thrive in commercial ice making machines. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that facilities clean, disinfect, and maintain ice machines on a regular basis in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Periodic cleaning of commercial ice machines is necessary to ensure optimum performance and to insure the production of clean, sanitary ice. Barclay’s Environmental Group performs ice machine cleaning and disinfection procedures on all makes and models of commercial ice machines. We also provide a cleaning certificate and written report with before and after photographs to validate our cleaning process.

Decorative display water fountains are designed to provide a pleasant environment, but they can be deadly if they contain waterborne pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila. In recent years, decorative display fountains and water features have come under close scrutiny because they have been identified as one source of the bacteria responsible for outbreaks of Legionnaires ’ disease. Periodic cleaning and disinfection of decorative display fountains and water features is the best way to ensure bacteria-free water.
